A Day in Canberra

Canberra is an insouciant city with activities to suit all sorts of lifestyles. Explorers, loungers and hipsters alike will find excitement in the diverse backdrop of Canberra. Peel away the politics to reveal a vibrant landscape dotted with national parkland, vivacious cafes and laidback people.

A day in Canberra is best spent lazily hopping between coffee shops in leafy suburbs and exploring all that the vibrant cultural sector has to offer. Begin your day with a walk in the hilly Isaacs Ridge. Kangaroos scatter under the trees and eucalyptus scents the air. Make your way to the top for panoramic views of Walter Burley Griffin’s 1912 designs of south Canberra.

Follow your walk with a late breakfast and coffee and the ever-hip lakeside suburb of Yarralumla.  Home to one of Canberra’s glasswork factories and one of the cities largest parks, Yarralumla is a lively area that is frequented by families, students and pensioners alike. There is a bit of something for everyone here.

Families will find many exciting activities suited to all ages in Canberra. Put a trip to Questacon on the cards for an educational experience suited to the entire family. Little ones will also love exploring the grounds of the National Botanical Gardens in a safe environment.

Head down to Manuka for lunch at one of the many charming cafes serving a multitude of international cuisines. Kopi Tiam is a local favourite serving deliciously authentic Malaysian food. Grab a coffee and a plate of Mie Goreng and watch the world walk by.

Take a stroll down to Kingston after lunch. The suburb has experienced a real transformation over the last ten years with it now becoming the most experience area of Canberra to buy or rent in. It’s not difficult to see why with the hip bustling restaurants that sit against the gorgeous foreshore and the sleek, contemporary units that line the belly of the lake.

As the sun sets, head over to new Parliament House in Parkes. Take a seat on the top of the grassy mound and watch as the orange sun fades into the city. Hop into an Uber and head through the humming city to hipster-loving Braddon.

There are endless options for delicious food in Braddon. Make your way to the Hamlet, an open space filled with food trucks and bar carts, for a last meal. Choose between Vietnamese, Indian, American or Greek and wash it all down with an ice cold craft beer while the city lights flicker.
